Die Protome eines geflügelten Pferdes oder Hippocamps war das Wappen von Lampsakos und schon auf seinen frühesten Münzen das Motiv der Vs., wie das vorliegende Exemplar belegt. Später zierte es die Rs. der seit der Seeschlacht bei Knidos geprägten Goldstatere, während die Darstellungen auf dem Avers wechselten.
