In den ersten Jahren als Kaiser war Nero ein beliebter Herrscher, der sich durch gute Berater wie Seneca lenken ließ. Er wurde dann aber wohl immer exzentrischer und unberechenbarer, so daß er 68 n. Chr. vom Senat zum Staatsfeind erklärt wurde und in auswegloser Situation Selbstmord beging.
