Ex Lanz 153, 2011, Los Nr. 605. Gratianus war der Sohn des Valentinianus I. und wurde bereits mit 8 Jahren zum Augustus ausgerufen. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters und seines Onkels war er mit 19 Jahren Hauptkaiser des Reiches. Die Niederlage des Valens bei Adrianopel verstärkte die Bedrohung der Donauprovinzen durch die Goten; in dieser verzweifelten Lage ernannte Gratianus 379 den verdienten Offizier Theodosius zum Mitkaiser. 4 Jahre später revoltierte der Kommandeur der britannischen Legionen Magnus Maximus. Gratianus unterlag ihm und wurde auf der Flucht in Lugdunum getötet.
