Die Darstellung des Jupiter geht auf Zeusbildnisse der griechischen Antike zurück. wobei der Göttervater dort meist einen Adler (Aetophoros) oder eine Nike (Nikephoros) hielt. Aber auch die Variante mit Blitz und Zepter ist etwa auf Münzen aus dem thessalischen Gomphi aus dem 4./3. Jh. bezeugt.
